Columbus County woman charged after one dog found dead; other pets starving

A Columbus County, North Carolina woman has been charged with animal abandonment and cruelty after one dog was left dead in an abandoned home. Three malnourished dogs and two starving cats were also found.

Thelma Rebecca Creech Gore of Nakina was charged with five counts each of animal abandonment,k animal cruelty and failure to obtain rabies vaccinations after a concerned citizen called 911 last week to report a dead dog off Whitehall Road in an empty house north of Whiteville.

An Animal Control officer made the decision to set humane traps to capture the animals, along with clean food and water. Officers estimate the dead dog had been dead for less than a day, although the animals had been abandoned approximately three weeks ago.

Fenced in cages were found on the property, along with bags of empty food, feeding bowls, and dog houses.  Animal Control worked through the weekend to see the animals safely captured and taken to Columbus County Animal Shelter.

Gore will appear in court October 31.
